Netflix advantages:
- available on a lot of platforms (Xbox360, PS3, Wii, :apple:TV, iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, some set-top boxes, Silverlight)
- low cost (around 10$ per month, unlimited streaming)
Netflix disadvantages:
- only available in USA and Canada (extremely limited selection in Canada)
Apple advantages:
- could be launched in a lot of countries (probably everywhere there currently is an iTunes Store)
- already have a lot of iTunes Store user accounts worldwide
Apple disadvantages:
- would probably require an Apple-made device to access the content (bonus: no Silverlight installation required on Mac), as I don't see Apple making an app for the Xbox360, PS3, Wii and other set-top boxes (they'd rather sell you an :apple:TV)
- their servers are located in the USA, so I don't know if it's enough to serve streaming media worldwide. Do they currently have servers in other countries for the international iTunes Stores?
Technical issues aside, however, it all boils down to selection and price.

A much better file management system.
PPC support to end the platform lockout that Apple did when it surrendered to Intel.
Better reliability and recovery options. Get that Beachball of Death out of my face! Finder should not be able to bring down the whole system. No, Restart Finder doesn't always work, and even when it does, performance can suffer to the point of stalling. OS X should drop to a command line and automatically restart.

Ah yes, the old America-is-cheaper-than-the-world problem. You are right, the iPhone *can* cost more in some markets. I was talking about the American market.
And yes, more Android phones are sold than iPhones as long as you lump all the Android phones into one big bucket, including all those Asian knockoffs that are Android in name only.

Stupid, but funny.

It's funny, but wherever I go, I always see people with iPhones. My train, on plane trips between Chicago and NYC, during meetings, etc. I am amazed the number is only 5% - but I guess it's the circles that I am in.
Apple's Share of Global Mobile Phone Market Hits 5%.

but i couldn't get past the third page.
I think this might be more in reference to a tactile feedback surface that can display the keys under it. There is a very simple and rudimentary form of this on some alpine head units, but I also saw a prototype version of this type of input that was very impressive at a tradeshow in louisiana.
The screen actually provides physical feedback when touched that makes it feel like pushing a button or moving a slider... It was rather impressive.
If apple has gone much farther with this tech this could very well be a vague application for using that type of technology.
It would also make sense with some of the iPod and gestures interface patents we have seen recently.
just an idea.
Simply because i don't think apple is going to take their entire idea of simplicity and turn it into a giant bag of crap you have to tag along with you.

So much ignorance in this thread...
Have you ever looked at a financial report? Apple's GROSS MARGINS are reported. They are higher than other manufacturers.
Apple is charging a lot EXTRA because they can charge it. It is simple economics and supply/demand.
The MP is not broken down in the reports, but apple in general has very high GROSS margins.
I think it is hilarious that people think that apple is some benevolent company and that somehow the cost is extra for osx, etc. Frankly look at the GROSS margins in their financial reports! It is all about how much apple can charge and how much money they can make off of you!!!
I am a corporate customer. I accept the margins, and I pass the margins on to my customers in terms of higher prices for my goods. But, if I were going to buy a mac for surfing the internet, email, and MS word then the mac offers no benefit over a PC except for the name/style. Some will think the style is worth it (just like someone may buy an armani suit over a brooks bros suit), but in the end, it becomes a fashion issue.
So, the reason the MP is "overpriced" is simply: corporate profits.
Also note that most owners of the company - i.e. most owners of apple stock - are institutions - and they use PCs! The owners of the company use mostly pc's not macs. Sure the management uses macs, but not the OWNERS of the company.
The owners are more concerned with the profits.
Ok I will relax now. thanks guys.

In case you're answering to my previous post, I meant torrent tech directly in quicktime so that you don't connect just to Apple but also to everyone else watching the same movie at the same time. I used a program like that to watch the World Cup Games (streamed TV signal using torrent technology) and even for watching the finale the performance was amazing, we even watched it ona beamer!
Actually, I was just putting that out there for people looking for a torrent of it.
What program was that you used to torrent streamed TV? Sounds interesting!

Couple good blogs about the presentation and what we do and do not know about FCP X so far.
FCP X is shown to the world. Flashy things are seen, questions are asked (http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/ssimmons/story/fcp_x_is_shown_to_the_world._flashy_things_are_seen_questions_are_asked/)
New FCP X is really Not So New (http://www.mikejones.tv/journal/2011/4/13/new-fcp-x-is-really-not-so-new.html)

Thanks for the links. Hopefully when Apple updates the website we’ll have some more answers! Sadly that probably won’t happen until closer to the release date!
Really good write up here: http://www.larryjordan.biz/app_bin/wordpress/archives/1452#utm_source=feed&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=feed
One of the editors that had a sneak peek a few weeks ago and now can reveal all!

Trying to copy the free Android turn by turn. Apple always playing catch up.
Hehe, nice one. That's exactly the reaction Google would get if they started working on something Apple already did. Where are the "Start your photocopiers" posts now, eh? :D

I'll still use the mac pro so that would be 5 systems.
Heat is a problem for me too so the overclocking will have to wait a while and a new build will have to wait a couple of months.
oh ok. yeah 5 systems is quite a bit. i think for right now 4 is my limit. so for me to get anything else, i'd have to sell something. but we'll see. i'd love to build a 6 or 12 core system

So which do you prefer?
That's a bit of a hard call (do I prefer SlingBox or EyeTV?). I like SlingBox because it works without leaving my Mac running. However, the EyeTV supports recording and offers streaming over 3G. What I'd really like is a hardware product that offered both. Kind of like an AppleTV that I could keep at home and that allowed streaming over 3G. Unfortunately, I don't think Apple will ever offer an AppleTV-like product that supports recording and which offers either a cable card or a built-in tuner.
I guess the only reasonable Mac-centric solution would be a Mac mini paired with the EyeTV.

Love the new shuffle design, how much smaller can they make these things?!?! I feel my fat fingers might struggle.
I was thinking exactly the same thing with the convienience of the old style shuffle, was very handy for popping uni work on and what not, simple plug and go effort. shame that has gone in order to make things smaller.
cath
I was thinking exactly the same thing. The old shuffle was an excellent data key. I'd use it for running in the morning and data during the day. I can't keep my eyes off the shiny new little thing though.
If they bring something out to protect it from the elements when I'm bouncing around the roads on those cold wet sinter mornings we have in wales, then I think my old shuffle is going to make its way to my bro, he broke his a couple of weeks ago.

What was it's behavior before then.
I don't notice anything wrong with Expose
Windows retained their relative sizes when Expose was active. As of 10.6, windows are scaled to reach approximately equal sizes i.e. big windows become relatively a lot smaller.
Of the other things mentioned on the thread, the menubar is problematic across multiple screens but everything else I couldn't care less about. A 'Help' pulldown that doesn't noticeably pause the system would be nice.
Being on a four year old, strictly 32bit Core Duo, I'm not expecting my hardware to continue to be supported.

Doesn't say anything about historic tracking though. All that data seems to still kick around.
Just saw this: http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/05/03/new-app-aims-to-erase-swingers-online-tracks/
Looks like it clears out the historic data.
