I don't see the fact that the company is publicly endorsing jailbreaking & unlocking as an indication that a deal with Apple is coming soon, but whatever...

    I wonder which are worst:

    A) Video games based on movies, or
    B) Movies based on video games.

    Tough choice.

How about a video game based on a movie based on a video game? :)

    *snip*

I like the idea but I think that would be too much extra work for the Mods. I don't see what's the real benefit of that besides the fact that it would put an end to the gossips.

Also, the time-out may be caused by several posts (e.g. you first get warnings but keep breaking the rules and then you are given a time-out) so that would require even more work.

I think Mods can already see the infractions we have got in our profile (am I correct?).

Besides, as Blue Velvet pointed out, "Forum discipline is handled privately". That would be too public IMO. You can always PM the member and ask why did he get timed-out and he can then decide if he wants to tell you or not.

there have been a couple of other threads regarding the issue of the backlights going out on Apple's LCD monitors.

The top half of my screen has become dim.

however, if i turn my computer on and the apple OS load screen is running.. right when that screen turns on my LCD monitor's top half goes brighter than what it sits at once the computer is booted up.

this is about a half second of extra brightness. I see this when I wake the computer from sleep sometimes.

    whats the deal, any clues?

Thanks for injecting politics where it doesn't belong. Frankly, you shouldn't be voting if you don't even know that it's Democrats.

There is no direct impact on their bottom line because, unlike Sam's Club, Costco doesn't make a dime on any of the products they sell, only the membership fees. Of course there is indirect negative impact if the sole reason you would become a member was to buy an iPad, but I'm willing to bet the number of people who would do that is negligible.

That is the most absurd insane thing I've heard in quite a while.Care to prove me wrong?

Not really. Unless you care to elaborate based on your own professional experience, this is not what I've seen in the scientific sector. When a lab or organization uses Macs it tends to be localized to a particular group and almost never runs OS X natively. But admittedly my experience is limited to the US National Labs, JPL, and CERN.

Again, just because there are Macs in science doesn't mean creation of a "Macs in Science" forum will lead to any productive discussion about it. Look at how dead the Distributed Computing forum is now.

Whether or not the use of a Mac is localized to a particular group isn't really here or there - a lone graphic artist in a Windows-based office is equally localized. If a single user, or lab group, uses a Mac and the rest of the university doesn't, what does that actually matter for the poster?

In fact, that localization *is* a topic of discussion - the need for a Mac to "play well with others" has a much more expansive definition of "others" for most university settings.

My experience is contrary to yours - the Mac users in academia I know are keen to use OS X natively as much as possible, though admittedly many of them have a terminal window up as well. But 90% of what I do can run natively in OS X, and that number would be 100% if SAS would just come out with a Mac version, or I could be bothered to go learn STATA.

In terms of differences between most power users - Grids and other "server" type infrastructure becomes important to people whose training is frankly, not in that area (I for example, was busy getting degrees in biology), multithreading is something you *can* do, rather than just griping that Adobe/Apple/Whoever hasn't implemented it well yet, and the UNIX side of the machine will probably be seeing heavy use.

"Macs in the Workplace" threads pop up every now and then, but they're in the vast minority.

True, but that's kind of why sub-forums exist in the first place, no? So that low traffic threads don't simply vanish off the main pages?

That being said, the question was whether or not it would generate enough traffic to be justified. The answer to that may very well be no.

I have a Netgear WGR614 v4 in the center of the house. With the Dell laptop (P4M, Dell 1300 Wireless), I can get about 15 feet away. With the PB, I can get about 50 feet. With the iBook... about 120 feet. Although, when I'm that far with the iBook I need to be careful not to move around much because the signal drops drastically when walking about at that range.

But I would really recommend an Airport Express. And in fact, in a couple of minutes, I am ordering one. I'll use it when I'm at school and not around the WGR614 (and for now as an Airtunes station). The Airtunes benefit and the compactness of the AExpress is fantastic and the range is on an equal level to my Netgear (I've done the same testing for signal strength with the AExpress but it was in a different setting so the conditions wouldn't correspond well).

I'm 100% sure that people ask it many times in this forum, but i just had to ask.

I'm finishing soon "C for Dummies, 2nd Edition", what should i read next? my goals at the end are to know how to program an desktop application, not a game.

Thank you very much, as i understood i need to learn, C, C-Objective, and no idea what after it. So if can someone please give me the next step after i finish reading the C for dummies book i will be very thankful.

My learning style is hands on experience, i like to read and than write the book's example, so not just reading...

they may be a bit dated now, but they're still right. no matter how much you may dislike it, the majority of visitors to a website will be from IE, and it's completely pointless to not code for IE as you delete nearly 80% of your audience. that's all well and good if you're just coding for yourself and want a rebellious "mac only" site, but if you're coding a commercial site, you need to make it work across the board. it's just pretty annoying that there isn't anything for mac that truly represents the IE6 platform to make this possible.

    it's swings and roundabouts really...

I'm thinking about buying one of these dinky little mp3 players I've see. I kinda like the Creative Movo2 1.5 gig model, but can't find any details of whether it works ok with mac. Any ideas?

I really like the Packard Bell Audiodream too, but sinilar worries to above.

The only requirements I have are that my player be really small & have rechargeable battery.

No way I need anything as advanced as an ipod, I just wanna be able to play a few hours of tunes....

    HOLY CRAP!!!!
Ordered Wednesday - received today!!! Just got back from a meeting an it was waiting on my desk!
Opened up the brown shipping box, already thinking " wow the new box must be small", but on opening the actual iPod box was within another box!
The new box is tiny (due to the lack of power adapter  ) - it must be around a third of the size to the old box - 16cm x 16cm x 6cm. Remove the sleeve and you're greeted by the typical Apple clamshell packaging, the inner of the top section holding the headphones, USB2 cable and beltclip - the bottom (under the mini)holding the manuals etc. If anyone is bothered I may put up some pics when I get home...

I ended up going for the silver, and to my eyes it does look slightly darker than my current mini. I'll check when I get home if this is true before it goes off to its new owner.

Not sure if this is new, but there are operating instructions actually on the clear wrapping plastic surrounding the mini itself - I don't remember seeing them on my other iPods....

I'll be doing some real world testing on it tonight after I've given it a full charge and see how long the battery does last for....

I'm still amazed at the speed of this delivery! Nice one Apple!

Update: Just got home, and the new box is just over half as big as the old box, and the instructions are in fact on the back of the old mini wrapper too.... strange I've never noticed! The colours are identical - not really that surprising for the silver I suppose! The only obvious difference is the inclusion of the 6GB sign on the back of tne new mini...
